William Henry Gates III was born on October 28, 1955, in Seattle, Washington, to William H. Gates Sr., a prominent lawyer, and Mary Maxwell Gates, a schoolteacher and community leader. Raised in a family that valued education and civic responsibility, Gates showed an early aptitude for mathematics and a curiosity for computers.
At 13, Gates was sent to the Lakeside School, where he first encountered a computer, sparking a lifelong passion. He and his friend Paul Allen spent countless hours on the school’s Teletype machine, programming in BASIC. They even formed their first company, Traf-O-Data, at 17 to measure traffic flow. This early venture was a precursor to their later success.
Gates enrolled at Harvard University in 1973, intending to study law like his father, but his focus quickly shifted to computer science after reading about the Altair 8800 in Popular Electronics. In 1975, he dropped out of Harvard to start Microsoft with Allen in Albuquerque, New Mexico, where they developed their first product, an interpreter for BASIC for the Altair 8800.
Microsoft’s big break came in 1980 when it secured a deal to provide an operating system for IBM’s first personal computer, leading to the development of MS-DOS. This was followed by the launch of Windows in 1985, which transformed personal computing with its graphical user interface. Under Gates’ leadership, Microsoft became synonymous with software, dominating the market with Windows and Office.
Gates was known for his hands-on approach to software development, even coding during Microsoft’s early years, but as the company grew, he transitioned into a strategic role, focusing on expanding Microsoft’s products into new areas like internet browsers and gaming with Xbox.
In 2000, Gates stepped down as CEO to focus on philanthropy with his then-wife Melinda French Gates, whom he married in 1994. They established the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000, aiming to enhance healthcare, reduce poverty, and expand educational opportunities globally. The foundation has become one of the world’s largest private foundations, with significant achievements in eradicating diseases like polio and improving education access.
Gates’ approach to philanthropy is as strategic as his business tactics, focusing on measurable outcomes and leveraging technology for solutions. He has also been involved in climate change initiatives through Breakthrough Energy, investing in clean energy technology.
One lesser-known aspect of Gates’ early life was his competitive nature; he was known for his intense focus on winning during board games at school. His curiosity about the world’s problems also led him to read extensively across various disciplines, influencing his approach to both business and philanthropy.
Bill Gates stepped down from his day-to-day role at Microsoft in 2008 but has remained chairman until 2014, then serving as a board member until March 2020, when he left to focus entirely on his foundation work. His personal life saw significant change with his divorce from Melinda in 2021, but both continue to co-chair the foundation.
